While exploring Utah's Valley of the Gods near sunset, our crew of three stopped near this tower because we really liked the cloud formation that was brewing. I found the scene to be more interesting for the shapes of the clouds, and searched the ground for something that to my eye echoed the clouds - this old bleached log and the adjacent rock did nicely. I felt the the monochrome treatment better reinforced these complementary shapes than did a color rendering. And by shifting to B&W I was able to push the tones around much more than a color treatment would have allowed, which better highlights the key elements of the scene. I shot this as a focus stack of 5 images.
