Description: To take this photograph, I left the Stovepipe Wells Hotel about an hour before sunrise in early January and walked southeast into Death Valley National Park. It was bitter cold. I sought a spot from which I could photograph an attractive sand dune at sunrise. In a mile or so, I found a dune with the sun to my left as I faced a range of mountains to the north or northwest, perhaps the Grapevine Mountains. For a moment shortly after sunrise, the sun illuminated the mountains through a narrow slit between the horizon and a layer of clouds, and I was able to capture that magical moment.
