Description: This image was taken on an afternoon hike in Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii’s big island. We crossed the expansive lava field flowing to the sea from the Kilauea volcano and found ourselves on the edge of the dry lava where it meets the sea. As early evening approached, progressively more spigots of lava began to open up and drip into the sea onto the black sand beach below. I watched safely from a cliff some distance away and was able to get some dramatic views of this interaction of fire and water as darkness set. A larger amount of lava hit the water in the background as I was shooting this particular shot, creating a vibrant orange cloud of steam.
