Apple today introduced the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus which include upgraded camera capabilities. Both the 4.7-inch display iPhone 7 and 5.5-inch display 7 Plus feature a 12-megapixel camera with optical image stabilization (a feature previously reserved for the Plus model in generation 6), a faster ƒ/1.8 aperture and an expanded color gamut.

The iPhone 7 Plus, however, takes mobile photography even further by adding a second camera. In addition to the 28mm wide-angle camera in the iPhone 7, the 7 Plus also incorporates a 56mm telephoto camera, for 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom capabilities. For optical zoom, the Camera app allows you to quickly switch between the two lenses.

In addition, a software update that will come later this year will allow the 7 Plus to do some interesting tricks with depth-of-field, using the dual-lens system to capture sharp foreground subjects while blurring the background. Apple describes this feature thusly: “Coming later this year, the dual 12-megapixel cameras also enable a new depth-of-field effect, using both cameras on 7 Plus to capture images, while sophisticated technology including Machine Learning separates the background from the foreground to achieve amazing portraits once possible only with DSLR cameras.”

The iPhone’s Camera app allows you to quickly switch between the wide and tele cameras on the iPhone 7 Plus for 2x optical zoom.

Both models also feature IP67-rated waterproofing, too, making it the first iPhone designed for shooting outdoors in inclement weather, and a new Apple-designed Image Signal Processor, which should improve overall image quality and noise reduction.

iPhone 7 colors

The iPhone 7 and 7 Plus will be available in five colors. The Space Gray offered in iPhone 6 is out, replaced by two new black options, one shiny and one matte.

The jet black color will be available only in the higher capacity 128GB and 256GB variants. Pricing starts at $649 for the iPhone 7 and $769 for the 7 Plus.
