We had spent time photographing Denali from a backcountry campsite, then moved over to the Matanuska Glacier to photograph ice climbers. The climber in this shot, Colby Coombs, runs a mountaineering school in Alaska and was helping me teach a photo workshop on adventure sports. He volunteered to climb this ice fin on the Matanuska Glacier for the shot. While the climbing in the image is serious, for experienced climbers like Colby this is something he is very comfortable doing. I couldn’t believe our luck when a huge storm came down the glacier and created dramatic dark clouds behind the ice. More drama for an already very dramatic shot! – Tom Bol
