“The island of Kauai has so many great photo opportunities for the landscape photographer,” says Lichtman. “Under the right conditions, Waimea Canyon rivals any of the canyons in the continental United States, especially with the vibrant green foliage and red-stained soils. I caught this view of the canyon as a rain storm rolled in just after sunrise, illuminating the canyon and the array of earth tones.”
Canon 30D, Canon EF 17-40 f4 L USM sy 17mm, Gitzo Traveler tripod. Base exposure of 1/30th sec., f/11, ISO 100, followed with a faster exposure at 1/90th sec. to hold details in the brightest clouds. These two exposures were then manually blended using layers in Photoshop.
