Chasing Rare Primates
Western Hoolock Gibbon (Hoolock hoolock) India
I leave tomorrow for the Peruvian Andes, home to the Yellow-tailed Woolly Monkey, another one of the 25 most endangered primates on Earth. For the past year, I have been concentrating on documenting these threatened animals – like this Hoolock Gibbon in eastern India – and trying to tell their stories. My recent cover story in Smithsonian magazine covered the Silky Sifaka of Madagascar, an animal whose population is in very real danger of extinction.
This is also the case for the Peruvian monkey that I’m after this week. I had hoped to blog from the field, but the area where these animals live is extremely remote – and far beyond the reach of wifi! So I will give a full report on the OP Blog, about the monkeys and the effort to save them, when I get back late next week. Wish me luck!
