Today’s Photo Of The Day is “Reaching For Light” by David Shield. Location: Chimney Beach, Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
“I remember during my early days of photographing landscapes how the main subject of a scene was the only thing I studied in the camera viewfinder,” says Shield. “Since that time, I have made myself look at what many photographers would consider to be the ‘big picture’ in an attempt to better understand how different elements relate to one another within a scene, and also in different lighting situations. I planned to take that thought process and use it for this particular scene. Photographing part of a downed tree at Chimney Beach from this angle, my vision for this shot was to create an image that presented a visual impression of scene elements interacting with each other, at a particular moment in time. To achieve this effect as closely as possible to the way I had envisioned it, I set the camera shutter speed to bulb, enabling me to shoot a few long exposures. For this final image, I blended a 150-second shot of the foreground with a separate 120-second image exposed for the sky.”
Gear: Nikon D610, AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G, B+W ND 110 filter, Gitzo tripod, Acratech ballhead
