Congratulations to Rick McPherson, whose image “Bee on Flower” is the winner of the Close-Up Nature Assignment!
“I was at a local botanical garden—Botanica, The Wichita Gardens—taking advantage of a warm day in late October. I was surprised to see a few bees buzzing around the flowers, and I thought this could be my last chance to capture a bee gathering pollen. I had my Canon 70-200mm lens on and, instead of switching to my 100mm macro lens, I added 13mm and 21mm extension tubes. I like using my big lens with extension tubes to really get up close, so when I head out for a hike, I leave my 100mm macro at home and take the set of extension tubes instead.”
Equipment & Settings: Canon 1DX, Canon 70-200mm ƒ/2.8 lens, 13mm and 21mm ProOptic extension tubes, ƒ/63, 1/800 sec, ISO 640
