We received over 1,000 entries to our Great Outdoors 2020 photo contest, capturing unique natural phenomena, dramatic, sweeping vistas and intimate portraits of wildlife.

Like giant chess pieces, the sea stacks stood on the sand waiting for their next move before the tide rolled in. For this player, that wasn't enough. The image needed a triangle to complete the composition. I found a washed-up pile of kelp and drug it into the scene. To break up the visually hard-edged rocks, I curved the kelp to help tie it all together. From there, it was a waiting game to see what move the sky offered.
