Hasselblad has designed the CFV-50c – a 50 Megapixel CMOS sensor digital back for vintage V system camera models. The CFV-50c is compatible with all V models dating back to first run manufacturing in 1957. Providing cable-free ease of use, the CFV-50c offers RAW and Jpeg options, an ISO range of 100-6400 with noise-free long exposures up to 12 minutes, a programmable shortcut button and 90° viewfinder among other added functionalities.
Priced around $15,000. For more information check out the press release below:
It’s ‘Back to the Future’ as Hasselblad launches a new CMOS digital back for V System photographers
21/07/2014 ‘The CFV-50c is a superb fusion of old with new; the traditional and classic look and feel of the V System body linked to Hasselblad’s advanced image capture technology – a perfect mix’, – Top portrait photographer Arne Weychardt.
V System photographers around the world are getting just what they asked for – a brand new CMOS-sensor based digital back that can be used with virtually all vintage ‘V’ cameras going back to 1957.
Announcing the new launch, which targets legions of dedicated V System photographers worldwide, Hasselblad CEO Ian Rawcliffe said: “We have experienced a substantial resurgence of interest in our iconic V cameras – users love the traditional ergonomics and the unique appearance – and now ‘V’ photographers everywhere can realise the true potential for these classic capture devices.”
He added: “Our research has shown that although we no longer manufacture V models, there is a big demand from our dedicated V System users who want to be able to continue to use their classic cameras but also desire access to our latest technology. The new CFV-50c, with its supreme image quality, is our response to that demand.
And this new unit is just part of our ongoing product development strategy. We have produced V Systems for over fifty years and now customers can really benefit from Hasselblad advanced digital engineering know-how with the CFV-50c.”
The announcement comes as Hasselblad underpins its sharp focus on core customers in the medium format sector.
The new, state-of-the-art CFV-50c, which will have an €11,000 price tag, boasts the same feature-rich functionality and performance level as the acclaimed H5D-50c camera – providing V System users with a unique opportunity to benefit from latest digital capture technology, including outstanding ISO capability.
One of the first photographers to test the new back is Germany’s acclaimed portrait shooter Arne Weychardt. He told Hasselblad News: “The CFV-50c is a superb fusion of old with new; the traditional and classic look and feel of the V System body linked to Hasselblad’s advanced image capture technology – a perfect mix. “This new back gives me a lot of new possibilities, to shoot on location under different conditions and circumstances. For me the new CMOS technology makes a huge difference, allowing me to shoot in available light using ISO speeds right the way through the range of the new back up to ISO 6400 and I was delighted with the results.
I also appreciated the ability of the back to offer me clean, noise-free images even at extended shooting times. It opened up plenty of new opportunities to shoot under challenging conditions, and I found the flexibility I had increased enormously. I also loved the new high resolution LCD screen.
The new unit fits perfectly into the design of the V System and sustains the beauty and heritage of these cameras.” He added: “Some of the world’s top celebrities I have photographed love to see me using vintage Hasselblad cameras. If they were to see a 35mm-style DSLR camera they wouldn’t give me the time, but when they see I’m using a classic Hasselblad they are happy to cooperate.
I photographed Clint Eastwood with my Hasselblad and later photographed him while he was being interviewed, this time using a 35mm-style DSLR camera because I was working reportage-style. He stopped the interview, smiled and said to me: “Didn’t you have a real camera before? What happened?”
