New Workshops – Hawaii and Colorado

Telluride Colorado Autumn by Jay Goodrich

I am happy to announce two new workshops that I am teaching later this year.

Telluride, Colorado, is a town who’s roots date back to the mining era of the 1800’s, it sits at an elevation of 8,750 feet. Mining remained the town’s only industry until 1972, when an entrepreneur by the name of Joseph Zoline put a ski lift up one of the hills. This was a history-altering event that has now led to a stable tourist economy, which even boasts an international film festival. Telluride is a town with a variety of people-the working class, the tourist, the ultra-rich, the local, and the hippie. This melting-pot of eclectic personalities gives Telluride its distinct flavor, and makes it a year-round destination for the eager artist to explore. A quaint historic downtown is surrounded by 14,000 foot tall mountain peaks creating a box canyon; the only way in is the only way out.

Join me as I lead a group of only six participants here this fall. For 3 days I will take you to photograph the town, the peaks, the forests, the streams, the valleys, and the autumn weather. I will critique your work daily, and guide you out in the environment to help you create the strongest compositions possible. This workshop is based out of the luxurious Hotel Telluride, conveniently located in downtown Telluride, within walking distance of all restaurants, shops, and even a sight-seeing gondola.

Dates: September 23-25, 2011 Price: $1000.00 For a detailed itinerary and more info visit the Telluride Workshop Page on my website.

The Coastline of Volcanos National Park by Gavriel Jecan

Next we are going to Hawaii with its green sand (yes green sand) and black sand beaches, a volcano that rises higher than Mount Everest, waterfalls, fern forests, lava fields, lava, monster, turquoise green waves, and some of the most spectacular sunsets you have ever seen. The Big Island of Hawaii. A country paradise. A photographer’s dream. Join myself and Gavriel Jecan on one  of the most unique travel experiences we have put together to date.

If you have followed the recent posts I have made regarding my trip to China you would have noticed that the imagery I created was not just about a single discipline of photography. It was about everything and anything that grabbed my attention. I even went so far as to create imagery of the culture, an aspect of photography that I have yet to truly explore. This is where the foundation of our Hawaii workshop lies. It is about the concept of the portfolio–a group of cohesive images that tell a story about a place.

We are not only going to explore some of the most dramatic locations this island has to offer during the best light, but also to learn what Gavriel and I consider the most important aspects of photography–composition, opportunity, light, Lightroom, Photoshop, and the overall portfolio. Lecture sessions will be coupled with image critiques to further reinforce our personal teachings. The idea is to help each participant in the group create a strong portfolio of images, mastered to publication standards, which can then be applied to any previous or future travels.

You will learn how create the strongest imagery in the field working with us in an intimate small group experience and then learn how to use Adobe’s Lightroom to catalog and globally master those images the same way that Gavriel and I do as part of our careers. In addition, I will highlight some of his most used Photoshop techniques to further improve the end result of your images. We will also have two image critique sessions to help you elevate your work ever farther. This is going to be a truly unique 7-day workshop experience not be missed.

Dates: November 5-12, 2011 Price: $3500.00 before July 1, 2011 then $3895.00. For a detailed itinerary and more info visit the Hawaii Workshop Page on my website.
