Sir Edmund Hillary, 1919 – 2008

January 11, 2008 | By Staff
Sir Edmund Hillary was a beekeeper, not a photographer. The New Zealander sealed his place in history when he became the first man to climb Everest, the world’s highest mountain, in 1953. The late Galen Rowell, famed nature photographer and OP columnist, knew Hillary and mentioned him in his columns. While conquering Everest is perhaps Hillary’s defining moment, he went onto lead many other expeditions to the far corners of the world while devoting himself to a variety of environmental causes and humanitarian efforts.
