Photo Of The Day by David Shield
Tumbling Toward Sunrise by David Shield
David Shield’s photo from the Mammoth Lakes area of California’s Eastern Sierra Nevada region is today’s Photo Of The Day. Shield submitted the photo to the View From The Top Assignment which is open for submissions until tomorrow at midnight. This photo shows the value of scouting a spot ahead of time and to keeping an open mind when you previsualize a shot. Shield writes how he got the photo, “After scouting this location the day before, I decided to return here at sunrise to photograph this scene. A partly cloudy sky was forecast; however to my disappointment the sky was completely clear. Therefore, I chose not to shoot at first light, but to wait until the morning sun illuminated part of the scene, creating warm tones. Once the sunlight fully lit the trees at the left of the scene, I began shooting.” He used a Nikon D7000, Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX lens, Gitzo Series 2 Tripod, Vanguard BBH-200 ballhead and a Singh Ray 3-Stop Soft ND Grad.
I select a Photo Of The Day every day. I choose the images from the various OP galleries including Assignments, Your Favorite Places and all of the OP Contests. Also, for each issue of the magazine I go through the Assignments galleries and choose a few to be featured in The Best Of Assignments in print and I select a weekly winner to be featured on the OP home page. To get your photos into the running all you have to do is submit them.
