False Kiva in Canyonlands National Park is a popular photo location and every year I receive at least a few submissions with a shot from this spot. Night photos from here, however, are very rare. Steven Hirsch submitted this photo to the Parks, Preserves & Monuments Assignment and it’s today’s Photo of The Day. Hirsch writes this about getting the photo, which is more difficult than you might think, “False Kiva is an ancient site in a remote part of Canyonlands NP” he writes, “the hike there is strenuous and the hike back in the dark is daunting. I was anxious on the hike there but once I saw the Milky Way rise, I knew it was all worthwhile.” Hirsch used a Canon EOS 5D Mark III, a Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L lens and an Induro tripod.
I select a Photo Of The Day every day. I choose the images from the various OP galleries including Assignments, Your Favorite Places and all of the OP Contests. Also, for each issue of the magazine I go through the Assignments galleries and choose a few to be featured in The Best Of Assignments in print and I select a weekly winner to be featured on the OP home page. To get your photos into the running all you have to do is submit them.
Special thanks to Tokina for their sponsorship of the OP Assignments.
