Sir Edmund Hillary, 1919 – 2008

Sir Edmund Hillary was a beekeeper, not a photographer. The New Zealander sealed his place in history when he became the first man to climb Everest, the world’s highest mountain, in 1953. Widely considered one of the 20th century’s greatest explorers, Hillary’s unwavering spirit of adventure and commitment to the environment are part of what defines our mission here at Outdoor Photographer. The late Galen Rowell, famed nature photographer and OP columnist, knew Hillary and mentioned him in his columns. While conquering Everest is perhaps Hillary’s defining moment, he went onto lead many other expeditions to the far corners of the world while devoting himself to a variety of environmental causes and humanitarian efforts.
