Calgary Lightning by Richard Gottardo

Calgary Lightning by Richard Gottardo

Photographer Richard Gottardo

“The photo was taken on the night of July 25, 2013.  I found this spot on the hill overlooking the Calgary skyline when I first moved to Calgary about 6 months ago and have been waiting for a good thunderstorm to roll in so I could get some photos of it over the city skyline. Every time there was a chance of some lightning for the city I would wait there to try and capture some photos of it. Finally on the 25th of July, a fairly intense lightning storm moved in and I was able to capture it!
“I was shooting continuous 8 second exposures to capture the lightning which I then brought into Lightroom and stacked together to show all the lightning strikes. In total that photo consists of 11 consecutive 8 second exposures. I actually wrote up a tutorial a while back going into a lot more detail on the method, you can find it here if you like: http://www.richardgottardo.com/how-to-photograph-lighting-a-tutorial/
Gottardo used a Canon EOS 5D Mark III and a Canon TS-E 45mm f/2.8 Tilt Shift Manual Focus lens.
