One mid-August morning, I drove out to the Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park to hike the Skyline Loop Trail. Dense fog had dramatically reduced visitation numbers, which led to more wildlife activity near the trail. About a quarter-way through the loop, I encountered a water-soaked hoary marmot calmly combing through a misty meadow for flowers and grasses. Every so often, the marmot glanced up from foraging to meet my gaze.
