The Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA) is one of the top annual photography competitions, with photographers from around the world submitting their images for a chance at international recognition and large cash prizes. This year's prize pool totals $423,000, with the grand prize winner taking $120,000, and additional prizes ranging from $6,000 to $25,000 in the contest's various categories.

This year's categories include "The Challenge" which calls for images "conveying the theme of challenge in a clear manner either in the way the photograph was shot or in its content and subject matter." Additional categories include "Portfolio," a multi-image storytelling category, "Digital Manipulation" and "General" for images that don't precisely fit the other themes, and which is divided into two subcategories, one for color and one for black-and-white images.

Lynn Emery's (UK) photo of flamingos was last year's 2nd place HIPA "Wildlife" winner. "Flying with flamingos over Lake Turkana in Africa's Great Rift Valley. A study in light, colour and contrast that evokes the feeling of a painting."

Last year's winner in the "Wildlife" category was wildlife photojournalist and conservation photographer Steve Winter, whose work has been featured in Outdoor Photographer and who is perhaps best known for his iconic photo of the mountain lion P22 in the Hollywood Hills.

The deadline for submission is October 31, 2016 at midnight UAE Standard Time (UTC +4). The competition has no entry fees, though you are restricted to one entry per category — except for the "Portfolio" category, to which you can submit 5 to 10 photos.

Last year's 3rd place winner in the HIPA "Wildlife Category" was taken by Minming Lin (China). "Water flows steadily from a reservoir, collecting all but the most determined in its dream-like stream."
