Take the 17-Mile Drive and select one of the many pull outs when the road hugs the coastline.
ND graduated filters will be essential as the sky is lit up by the rising sun, or take multiple exposures and blend them later in post-processing.
There are many beaches to visit along the Monterey Peninsula, but I'm very fond of this one along the 17-Mile Drive. I arrived before dawn and set up my camera and tripod and waited hopefully for a show of dawn light on these fabulous foreground rocks and the sky over the Pacific. I knew the sun would be coming up behind me any moment. When it did, this lone seagull decided to pose for me and make my composition complete. That's him on the peak of the rock formation in the center of the image.
