Just outside of Stovepipe Wells, park on the side of the highway and start walking out to the dunes. It takes a lot longer than you'd think to get out into the midst of it, and the sun rises fast, so be prepared!
Awoke before dawn to drive to the parking area for the dunes and start hiking out. So many cool shapes, but so many footsteps. It was grueling hiking far enough out for pristine dunes. The telephoto zoom greatly helped isolate shapes and patterns. The actual window of great light can be surprisingly short. The clouds really helped keep the light and sky interesting for longer on this particular day.
The Mesquite Dunes just outside Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley. A Photographer's paradise.
