Minaret Overlook

Nearest Area
Hwy 203
Mammoth Lakes
Brief Directions

From Hwy 395, exit and continue on Hwy 203 through the town of Mammoth Lakes, past the ski area and to the point where 203 ends before dropping into Reds Meadow.

The road to the Minaret Overlook doesn’t open until the late spring or early summer, depending on the depth of the snow, as the road isn’t plowed in the winter (however, people do cross-country ski or snowshoe to the point), and it closes with the first snow falls in autumn. The Minarets are name for the tall mosque towers in the Islamic world, their spires remained above the ice-age glaciers and continued to weather the brunt of splintering erosion. Whenever possible on trips to this area for skiing, fishing and hiking, I make it a point to spend at least one evening at sunset at this overlook. The most important element is clouds. A bald ski makes it hard to take an interesting shot. This photo was taken in the evening when clouds are typically backlit by the setting sun. Even in the summer and certainly in the fall, the altitude combined with a stiff wind can make it necessary to dress warm and wear gloves. Also, a graduated ND filter or sunset filter can help to intensify the sky.
