The easiest way to reach Sintra is by taking the train from Lisbon. The small city can easily be negotiated on foot. Fro there you can either take a small bus up to the castle, rent a bike or... walk. And take pictures. Lots of pictures.
Palácio da Pena, a Palace built even before the Rhine castles, sits atop a dense park and forest planted by Ferdinand II, a portuguese king of austrian origin. The palace, that Richard Wagner aludes as the place of the Grail in a visit to Sintra, is the oldest palace inspired by European Romanticism mixing several styles: Neo-Gothic, Islamic and Neo-Renaissance.
