The rainy season in Japan brings humidity, heat and GIANT spiders. While I was told these spiders don't bite, I didn't get close enough to put that claim to the test. This spider was just one of about 10 in a matrix of interlocking and twisting webs strung through a bush and a tree on a sunny day in Nirayama, Japan. It was only the brightness of the different colors that kept me from running face first into these spiders on the way back from a long day of teaching. Having these big guys crawling all over me is NOT the way I would like to end my day.
