In the middle of the summer, finding a place to catch the colorful light from the setting sun on Mt. Rainier is difficult in the Paradise region. That was confirmed when the wife and I arrived at a preplanned location for sunset on our one and only night in the park. With the absence of a colorful display at the original location, we put the camera gear in the car and went exploring. On the drive this scene of the Nisqually River Valley was spotted. Immediately this became our sunset spot. The car was pulled over into a legal parking area and we did a brisk hike back to the location. The end result is fantastic and erases all doubt that ditching the original location to go exploring was the correct decision.
