Yosemite National Park is situated within the Sierra Nevada Mountains in eastern California. I use Highway 140 to reach the park's western boundary from Merced, California- but there are entrance points through the Tuolumne Meadows and Wawona areas of the park too. Tuolumne Meadows is located at 8600 feet elevatiion and is accessed through Highway 120.
I worked for a concessions services company at the Ahwanee Hotel as a Baker's Helper for about fifteen months during which time, I photographed the park during my days off from work. This photo was made during one of those days off in the middle of summer, around 8:30 at night. I will never forget this day. I took the bus from Yosemite Valley at 4400 ft. elevation up to Tuolumne Meadows which is at 8600 feet and waited until around 4:30pm before beginning my descent to Yosemite Valley. I did this because I wanted to photograph Half Dome just after sunset when it has that alpine glow to it. But I wanted to do this from a similar elevation as Half Dome itself, instead of the usual image taken of Half Dome during sunset from the valley floor. It was July and very hot, in the ninety degree range. I ran out of water during the descent, and I was actually disoriented and suffering from heat stroke when this photo was made. I had no choice but to continue down to Mirror Lake at the valley floor. I arrived at Yosemite Valley at around 11:30- the shuttle buses stop service at 10:00pm, and so, I had to walk the distance from Mirror Lake to a campground in order to find water. I had been hoping to reach the valley floor by 10:00pm in order to use the shuttle bus, but I could not make it on time and had to walk even more before relief came.
