From the Inland Valley take I-15 toward Victorville. Take the Hwy 395 turn-off south of Victorville. North to Lone Pine. About a 3 hour drive.
The Alabama Hills are great at any time of the year with the exception of the hottest times of the summer. Mt. Whitney and Lone Pine Peak are the dominant mountains of the Eastern Sierra in this area and the boulder and rock areas of the Alabamas provide exceptional foregrounds for deep scenic photography.
Most of the drive on Hwy 395 was through an Alaskan winter storm. Although the Eastern Sierras were hidden behind cloud cover it was an exceptionally beautiful drive. After arriving in Lone Pine we immediately headed for the famous Alabama Hills where blizzard conditions turned the hills into a sight I'd never seen in the area.
