Description

I was planning trip to this place for weeks. Doing resarch on internet wasn't too useful as this cave is no really on turist map. I found couple of photographers who went there but none of them wanted to tell me how to get down to the cave. Fortunately I have met Kerstin Hellmann a photographer from Louisburgh Co.Mayo who gave me a lot of very useful info and guided me safely. Thank you Kerstin :-) Cave is on the bottom of Downpatrick Head cliff (126ft, 39 m) and it's usually filled with water. It can be only approached during the spring low tide. It's not so hard to reach but place is extremely dangerous. First you have to walk for about 300 m on very slippery rock shelfs uncovered by ocean during low tide. I almost landed in the ocean few times. Then you have to walk into the cave where is no escape and you have massive amount of wilde water in front of you. I have to say it..I was never more scared in my life. You really have this feeling how little you mean against the powers of nature. Cave view on Dun Briste Downpatrick Head Co. Mayo
