Early morning view of the Merced River from Cathedral Beach in Yosemite National Park. The original plan was to photograph El Capitan as the early light hit the rock face. I never really liked what I saw—partially due to the extreme distortion of looking up from such a close location near the base. However, lack of equipment (tilt-shift lens) and more importantly, minimal vision of the finished product, and lack of skill. Not liking what I was seeing on the tiny screen on the back of my then 5-year old camera, the light at the bend of the Merced River caught my eye. The morning light on the trees, the reflection on the very high, yet mostly flat surface of the river is a very beautiful sight to witness. There is no better therapy then the stillness and peace of being in nature. Even if the end result is not the best product, the experience far outweighs any photographic disappointment (not to mention the drama of a bear sighting at the other end of the picnic area).
