Brief Directions

Magnetic Island is just 5 miles offshore from Townsville, North Queensland, Australia. A 20 minute ferry ride brings you here. The most famous butterfly spot is called "the butterfly forest" which is in Horseshoe Bay. Just ask a local. Note: The latitude is 19 South!

Notes

Winter in this hemisphere is June - July - August. The Blue Tiger butterflies migrate here in huge aggregations in winter. This photo is of a male Cairns Birdwing, which is found year round, in coastal North Queensland, and breeds here in spring and autumn.

Description

A Birdwing Butterfly has emerged from its crysalis in my back yard, where I grow the food plant for their caterpillars. There was some unattractive fencing behind this one so I draped some window curtain lace behind it for a backdrop.
