From Escalante, take SR12 eastbound to Hole in the Rock Road and head south for about 12 miles on this washboarded but usually passable dirt road. Turn right onto BLM road 225 for a half mile to the Devil's Garden parking area. Road may be washed out and impassable during and after heavy rain.
Devil's Garden is a photographer's paradise with beautifully colored sculpted sandstone in a very compact and easy to negotiate area.An easy stroll from the parking area brings you to the heart of the garden. Early and late light make a world of difference in the quality of photograph you'll be able to take here. Regarding this particular image, I found very early light was clearly preferable. I arrived in the Garden the evening before and found this perspective of the tree framed by sculpted stoneto be very appealing - but the light was all wrong. Upon returning before sunrise the next morning, the cloud formations were sensational and I was ready and waiting with tripod mounted camera when the light got really interesting.
