Brief Directions

One of the most beautiful and enjoyable ways to travel to the Olympic Peninsula is to cross Puget Sound by ferry, leaving from downtown Seattle. The trip is relaxing, quite spectacular and saves a lot of time and gasoline as compared to driving overland from Olympia. Once on the peninsula, pick up US 101 and follow signs to Port Angeles. The road into Olympic National Park and Hurricane Ridge is accessed from US 101. Stop at the Park Visitor Center along this road for maps and park information.

Hurricane Ridge is particularly enjoyable in late October when crowds don't exist and huckleberry and other shrubs turn brilliant shades of red, yellow and gold. Dawn and dusk can be spectacular here with sunrises and sunsets interacting with the awesome mountain peaks. Several trailheads in the main parking lot will bring you, on mostly paved trails, to vista points that will provide you with plenty of photo opportunities. This photo was taken along one of these trails where you will encounter families of docile deer which, if approached cautiously, can easily be included in your scenic photos. Carry a tripod and long lens to capture the majesty of the rugged, often snow covered peaks.
