Photographed on Avery Island, Louisiana, early in the morning. I was actually photographing some egrets taking off when I almost stepped on this alligator. The big guy was lying motionless like a rock on the sloped bank of the bayou, probably enjoying the morning sun. I stopped just in time and quickly backed up, adrenaline rushing through every inch of my body. After watching him for a few minutes, I crouched down low on my knees and started taking some photos with my 200-500mm zoom. This particular shot was actually taken while lying flat on the ground - eye level with the alligator and his POV of the world. The entire time though I was ready to jump up and run. Quite an experience, for sure. After working on the image at home in Lightroom, I decided to go with a more dramatic one-color finish: Black & White for most oft the image - except for the alligator's intense yellow, almost glowing eyes, which I left pretty much untouched.
