Who do you think this mandible might have belonged to? I often call them the "soul of the planet" and if you guess elephant, then you are right. Did you know that the main natural cause of death of an elephant is due to the change in dentition? They have SIX sets of molars in a lifetime. These molars begin in the back of the mouth and slide forward over a lifetime. When one set is worn out, it's replaced by those moving in, and when there are no more...malnutrition and starvation. They can certainly live long lives though, and that's what I always hope for them. This particular mandible was naturally occurring, and we just happened upon it during my trip to the Serengeti in Tanzania.
