Colorado's Wet Mountain Valley is known for producing unusual weather systems since this large valley is bordered by the 14,000+ ft high peaks of the Rockies to the West and by the Wet Mountain Range to the East. Bizarre cloud formations and storms can pop up at any time as it happened when I took this image: At first, it looked like a fairly boring sunset with just a bit of orange tinting the winter evening sky. I was almost ready to pack up my gear - when suddenly the colors in the sky intensified, reflecting golden off the snowy valley floor and out of nowhere this funky, white clouds billowed up from the valley. That the top of the vapor sculpture became illuminated very briefly in this beautiful salmon-orange was truly the icing on the cake. Glad I stayed....
