Photographed at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge on Cape Cod in Chatham, MA.
The Refuge was established in 1944 to provide habitat for migratory birds and consists of more than 7,000 acres of ocean, salt and freshwater marshes, dunes, and freshwater ponds of which 3,244 acres are designated Wilderness.
The Osprey is a raptor and is an excellent hunter that can be seen hovering in the air before diving into the water to catch fish. The Osprey was at one time was brought to the edge of extinction due to the use of DDT. Banning of this chemical in the U.S. in 1972 led to a resurgence in Osprey but there are still considered "ecologically sensitive".
Osprey can be found at Massachsetts in the spring and summer although this photo was taken in early September at Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge.
