Wildlife Drive at the refuge can be accessed off Curtis Rd., just west of M-13 in SE Saginaw County, Michigan.
A Black-crowned Night Heron hunts in this canal at the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, dubbed by some as the Everglades of Michigan, July, 2021. This is my first photo of these cool little herons in Michigan. I loved watching it cavort just like it does in the mangroves of Florida, its size giving it advantage in close quarters. The close quarters also protect it here from raptors, as Shiawassee is the home for many bald eagles.
