Wildlife Drive at the refuge is off Curtis Rd., just west of M-13 in SE Saginaw County, Michigan.
A juvenile bald eagle takes a short break in this perch in the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, August, 2021. I took this through the roof window of my SUV. I tried something new for this one. The wildlife along Wildlife Drive at refuges like Shiawassee habituate to the usual road noise from vehicles. They get spooked by the other noises associated with vehicles, such as car windows opening. For this one, I saw the bird from a distance and opened the roof window as the car was approaching, thus dampening the roof window opening sounds. I then could quietly stop, shut off the car to minimize vibration, and shoot up through the window. It also helps to be flexible, as one can get twisted around like a pretzel!
