On the cobble stoned Main Street on Nantucket Island sits the original home of Thomas Macy. The Macy's were one of Nantucket’s first settlers, among nine English families who bought the island in 1659 for 30 pounds sterling and two beaver hats. The original house was built in 1799. Macy remodeled the house in 1832. Today, it's owned by the historical commission and open to the public. Every Christmas season, it is decorated for the holidays. The iconic red star emblazoned on Macy’s storefronts across the U.S. can be traced back to the Macy family.
