Congratulations to Henrik Spranz for winning the Groundscapes Assignment!

“Seeing and photographing wild pasque flowers means starting the macro season,” says Spranz of Austria. “Though there are other early bloomers like the scilla or snowdrop, it's the pasque flower (Pulsatilla vulgaris) which really starts it for me. A good spot here near Vienna is a hill where you have a fabulous view of the city with the sun rising above it—and yes: there are pasque flowers, too. Especially at dawn, long before sunrise, it's not easy to find a pasque flower or even a group of them perfectly placed to get the rising sun included in the composition and you only have a couple of minutes before the light gets too bright—and it doesn't work every try. To get the sun as big as that you should use a tele or macro lens open wide.”
