Happy Birthday, Ansel Adams

As an artist, craftsman and environmentalist, Ansel Adams was one of the most important figures in nature photography. When I was young, I remember seeing Adams' photograph of "Clearing Winter Storm" photographed from Tunnel View in Yosemite. That photograph marked the first time I saw photography as more than a way to capture family memories. Adams inspired me to be a photographer, an endeavor that has brought me both joy and frustration ever since. The frustration has been from my inability to make a photograph that has the same impact as that image of "Clearing Winter Storm."

Adams was born 112 years ago today. Happy Birthday and thank you.

I had a chance to meet him in the 60’s when he was in Detroit. My friend went, I didn’t and have regretted it ever since. My friend returned with his signed book of images….. arrg.

It’s ironic that Outdoor Photographer is commemorating Adams’ birthday, since this publication has completely shut-out film photographers and articles on film photography for years.

It’s a beautiful photo of a great artist. Even in black and white, it looks great, very fitting it wasn’t in color You really appreciate photography that much more when you’ve used those old school cameras. I can imaging just how heavy that tripod in the photo must be, because those old cameras weren’t light 🙂
