Description

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the most photographed glaciers in the world; however you can’t find many shots taken after the sun has sunken beneath the horizon. Juneau’s backyard glacier is retreating quickly back into the massive icefield which feeds the Mendenhall as well as many other glaciers in the area. The glacier is utilized for such activities as ice climbing, hiking, and even underneath exploration for ice caves. The face of the glacier is partially underneath a fresh water lake. When ice calves from the glacier it splashes into the lake and eventually floats to the shore where it is sometimes used by fishermen in coolers and as a fancy way to keep punch cool at a party. Glaciologists determined that it takes about 250 to 300 years for the ice to make it from the icefield to the lake.
