This recent spring, I was photographing a pair of Mountain Blue Birds for several days in the Park. They had a nest with babies in an old tree, and made ongoing trips throughout the day gathering food and returning it to their young. As they returned each time they would stop on their favorite tree branch for a short break before bringing it into the tree cavity hole. On this day in the late afternoon, the male landed on a lichen-covered rock and preened. The overcast, soft light brought out its beautiful color.
