The powwow is held over several days and the dancers, individual and in groups, are judged by their dress, dance steps and the story that they tell in their dance.
In early autumn, the Shinnecock powwow has been held annually since 1946 on the east end of Long Island. It is considered one of the great ten American powwows. The powwow attracts many different tribes to assure that the ideas and traditions of their ancestors are passed down through the generations.
