Pictured Rocks is generalized area to the northwest of the city of Tucson. West Picture Rocks Road is the main road running through the area. To get there take interstate I-10 to exit 248 (Ina Road). Turn left (west) onto Ina road for about three miles to its terminus at Wade Road. Take Wade Road left (south) and this will turn into Picture Rocks Road. There are numerous pullouts along the road to stop and photograph.
I went out to the Picture Rocks area after hearing that there were good photo opportunities to be found. The sun was already setting by the time I arrived and I wasn't familiar with the area at all. I was feeling pretty rushed, which isn't good when you're trying to be creative and get good photos. I pulled over into one of the first pullouts I saw as traffic was surprisingly heavy. I started looking around for photo opportunities. My eye caught the ridge directly in front of me. I was drawn to the downward slope of the ridge with the evening sky silhouetting it. The numerous saguaro cacti jutting up from it added to the scene. I especially like the gradation from deep purple at the top to glowing orange at the horizon. The light lasted just long enough for me to snap off several frames before rapidly dying down.
