This was taken in early morning light along the Potomac river in Washington, DC. I used a 100mm prime lens I normally use for macro's and portraits. I was shooting with a Canon 7D that has a 1.6 crop factor. This crop factor gave me an equivalent 160mm with a full frame sensor. I waited from before dawn hiding among the rocks under some camouflage material. Great Blue Herons are quite skittish and require patience to get a good shot. I find it best to get the sun behind me so the birds can't see me as well.
