Nature’s Colors 2020 Contest Winners
Grand Prize: Thomas Falkowski
Title: Midnight Sun At Vestrahorn
“During this trip to Iceland, my wife and I spent a week and a half driving around the country in a camper van and taking in the stunning scenery. To make the most of the midnight sun, we slept during the day and did our driving and sightseeing at night.
“We pulled into Vestrahorn at a cold and windy time—but the relentless wind wasn’t a deterrent to capturing the majestic cliffs. The everlasting sunset, combined with the clouds and black sand dunes, created the perfect conditions to capture this photo.”
Sony a7R II, Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16–35 mm F4 ZA OSS at 16mm. Exposure: 1/60 sec., ƒ/4.0, ISO 100.
Second Prize: Chuck Robinson
Title: Canyon Light
“After driving for nearly two hours through the desert with some friends, I was a little disappointed because sunset was such a bust. Shooting the Milky Way that night didn’t produce anything, either, because the clouds had rolled in.
“I pitched my tent and settled in for the night and was awakened early the next morning from the thunderous sounds of passing storms. I quickly grabbed my camera gear and ran to the edge of the canyon and just started shooting, trying to capture lightning strikes. Once the sun broke the horizon, I became super elated as I was able to capture lightning, rainbows and the light kissing the tops of the canyon walls.”
Nikon D810, AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm F2.8G ED at 16mm, Gitzo GT3541XLS tripod, Really Right Stuff BH-55 ball head. Exposure: 1 sec., ƒ/9, ISO 64.
Third Prize: Hao Howard Liu
Title: Good Morning, Denali!
“Denali National Park is vast and majestic, especially during the short season of fall when the tundra turns into fiery color against the snow-capped mountains in the backdrop. I visited this park in 2006 for the first time and was so impressed that I always wished I could come back someday and spend more time to explore. In late August of 2019, my two hiking buddies grabbed a three-day camping ticket at Wonder Lake camping ground in the park. I was really lucky to be able to join this last-minute trip.
“This shot was taken in the early morning of August 29 when I was exploring the small hills near Mirror Lake. It was rainy during the night, so the air was wet and fresh. When the sun finally broke up the low-hanging clouds, it lit up the foreground and brightened the face of Denali. I found this triangle-shaped patch of colorful tundra and framed it with the highest mountain peak in North America in the far distance. The surreal calm and peacefulness made me speechless!”
Nikon D800, AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR at 16mm, Induro CT114 tripod with BHD0 ball head. Exposure: 1/8 sec., ƒ/9, ISO 100.
