I'm a fan of snow but we had a rough year for it here in Western Colorado this year. I was looking for alternatives to skiing and snowy landscape shots and turned my attention to ice. We have the largest body of water in Colorado here in Gunnison (Blue Mesa Reservoir) and when the skiing is bad, the skating is often pretty good. I saw these bubbles forming in the Gunnison River Canyon where it empties into Blue Mesa while out skating and decided I need to shoot them in creative ways. I tried several approaches but the one I like the best was this type of shot with a long-ish exposure and a couple of gelled flash pops straight down into the ice from either side of the camera to illuminate the bubble stacks. I grabbed this as a storm was rolling in that ended up covering the ice with snow later that night so it was my last chance at this particular location this season. I was glad I was able to hold the camera steady enough and the wind rolled in to get a reasonable shot.
