The high peaks of the Eastern Sierras rip storms apart as they continue their march inland from the west coast. In this image, the ferocious wind of one such storm blasts the top of Mt. Whitney, which at 14,505' is the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. As the rampage plows on, most of the time the mountaintops are shrouded in thick clouds, hiding the turbulence from view. But for one brief period, the never-ending battle between rock and wind was revealed.
