The Great Sand Dunes National Park is located in Mosca, Colorado and are the tallest dunes in North America. They are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes, and tundra. During the day, the dunes are covered with people - hikers, sledders, snow boarders (sand boarders, really!). However, at sunrise and sunset, the dunes are empty. Although sunrise was pretty spectacular, I found the sunsets to be the best. In this photograph, the Great Sand Dunes lie in the forefront of the alpine peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
